Tenants fee at 2019 reminder

Since the 1st June 2019 the Tenant Fees Act 2019 prohibits letting fees paid by tenants in the private rental sector and also caps tenancy deposits.

The aim is to prevent landlords from charging tenants for anything other than rent, a tenancy deposit and a holding deposit.

There are other permitted payments including interest charges, late payments (subject to limits) and the reasonable cost of replacing lost keys.

The Act limits tenancy deposits being collected to 5 weeks rent (6 weeks where the annual rent is £50,000 or more) and holding deposits to one weeks rent.

Assured Shorthold Tenancies will be covered including lettings to students and licences to occupy houses.
