Berry Recruitment Group (BRG) is a highly respected and successful recruitment agency, with headquarters in St Albans, Herts. The company was formed by a team of industry experts that include Tony Berry, former head of Blue Arrow and Recruit plc. BRG has been named in the top ten fastest growing multi-sector recruitment businesses and has built long term partnerships with many highly recognised clients.
Sherrards Solicitors have worked closely with BRG over the last few years on a series of acquisitions for BRG. We talked to Chris Chown, Managing Director of BRG, about the growth of BRG and the role of their legal advisers in the process.
How has the recent growth been achieved?
Our growth has been a mixture of organic growth supplemented with strategic targeted acquisitions. On the acquisition side, we look for firms that fit our profile and have excellent staff. Our most recent acquisitions of Mainline Resourcing, the Plus Team and Headway are all London based and have consolidated our position in the Capital.
Our staff are essential to the success of our business and our recruitment and training programme is designed to attract and retain high quality staff, and it is working well. We now have over 30 branches across the country employing over 180 people and our gross profit has seen a 15% increase over the last year.
How important are your legal advisers to this process?
Extremely important! We need lawyers who understand the recruitment agency sector, are very responsive and have the ability to drive matters to a successful conclusion.
Jean-Paul da Costa and his commercial team at Sherrards succeed on all fronts. They are pragmatic and commercial and can be tough minded and tenacious as circumstances require. Sherrards have supported our business through a time of accelerated growth, providing invaluable support on a range of matters.
Do you plan to move into any new areas?
At the end of 2014, we acquired Mainline Resourcing, which operates in the fields of telecoms, energy and rail.
The acquisition boosts our turnover by about £5m and gives us entry into the rail sector, which is growing rapidly across the country with some major projects planned. We aim to quickly expand the new acquisition through investment and new staff. Mainline has some big clients and we will continue to develop those relationships.
Organically we have focused on developing our existing specialist sectors across our branch network and more recently we launched a new brand, Antony Berry Associates, to maximise growing opportunities within Accountancy and Finance.
And what of the future?
Following our most recent acquisitions, we are on track to achieve turnover in excess of £56m in 2015 and our ambition is to continue to grow and develop the business, be it by acquisition or organic growth. We aim to expand our reach into professional and managerial level roles, while continuing to grow our core, existing business. It looks as though there may be more rich pickings for BRG in the future.
