Jean-Paul da Costa presented Sherrards’ corporate credentials at the recent Alliott Group EMEA meeting in Paris as part of ‘Team Sherrards’. Jean-Paul’s key message was that the UK is very much open for business.
Jean-Paul da Costa observed that investors are attracted to London and the UK because of a number of reasons including the fact that London is one of the world’s leading financial centres. The legal system and Courts are widely recognised as being first class and even handed. As Jean-Paul observed, commercial property construction is going through the roof!
Nicole Marmor, head of private client, first of all highlighted the firm’s notarial services which Nicole noted, unlike in other European jurisdictions, is not very common. Jean-Paul is one of only 700 notaries in England among 130,000 lawyers. This has attracted a great deal of enquiries from those operating in the international sector.
Nicole also reported to the lawyers attending that a new European succession regulation (Brussels IV) will be coming into effect from August 2015, the effect of which is that those under European forced heirship systems may now be able to override them if habitually resident in a member state that has freedom of succession e.g. the UK. This generated a great deal of discussion at the meeting.
Managing Partner Alasdair McMillin is delighted with our participation in Alliott Group which, in his view, forms the backbone of our international practice, providing access to law and accountancy firms across the globe. Alasdair is keen for the firm to continue to develop its international links which reflect our clients’, friends’ and contacts’ needs to expand into other business markets and/or make international investments. As Alasdair would say, our contacts are your contacts.
Paul Marmor is head of the firm’s litigation and international services teams, and as chair of the legal side of the Alliott Group has played an important role in the recruitment of new member law firms together with the group’s CEO James Hickey. Paul also attends meetings of the American Bar Association, International Bar Association and The CIS Local Forum, and the firm liaises with UKTI. ‘We pretty well have the world covered or know people who know the right people in terms of access to professionals just about anywhere! As we say at Sherrards, Think International, Think Sherrards!’
