The Sherrards Assassins, an amateur rugby team, had yet another excellent tournament at the Harpenden Rugby 7’s Tournament last month. The weather was awful, but it didn’t prevent over 30 teams attending, nor did it dampen the quality of rugby.
The Assassins won all their group games and successfully overcame the opposition in both their quarter and semi-finals. They met a very strong Italian national squad in the final. Despite a superb effort and a very gritty first half which saw them going into half-time leading, they eventually lost 17-7 to the Italian side. It was a courageous effort against a full-time team.
Next stop is the RBS international 7’s in Dubai at the end of November and if the Assassins play as well as they did at Harpenden, they can look forward to another successful tournament.
The Assassins, who are sponsored by Sherrards Solicitors, have been building strong relationships with the Swedish national side. Sean “the Viking” has been playing for the team for a few years and captains the Swedish national side who were promoted last year to the Grand Prix circuit and playing some of the top ten teams in the world. At the tournament in Harpenden, the assassins were joined by three more of the Swedish squad, one who has already played for the team in Dubai and another who is based locally and who plays for the Old Albanian Rugby Club in St. Albans. This has given us a very solid foundation to continue developing the squad.
